Dear Mr. Berend,

On behalf of Parkinson’s Europe, we are writing to you with regard to a very critical issue – glyphosate, a very controversial pesticide – which is a priority issue for the Parkinson’s community, as it is for many other diseases, and the environment. In the attachment, you will find our FAQ document which provides a comprehensive overview of the issue.

On the 16th November 2023, there is a scheduled vote in the European Commission’s ScoPaff where Member States will need to take a decision on whether or not to renew the licence for glyphosate for a new 10-year period.

This is a critical decision, one that has already been postponed due to a lack of majority, clearly pointing to the fact that there is deep and broad divide within the 27 Member States, which is perfectly normal given the very serious concerns on glyphosate. These concerns must not be overlooked or brushed aside, and we therefore call upon your organisation to carefully consider the consequences for the environment, public health, and for people with Parkinson’s.

Please reject the vote to renew the licence and ban glyphosate once and for all.

It is simply not acceptable to renew the licence knowing the many concerns out there, let alone that there is no evidence to demonstrate that glyphosate is safe and that there are actually safe alternatives for use. The EU needs to uphold its precautionary principle and protect the environment and public health.

Drie maanden later, op 8 maart 2024, kreeg Parkinsons Europe dit antwoord over de vernieuwde toelating van glyfosaat. In deze brief schrijft Klaus Berend onder andere:

 “Ik wil ook onderstrepen dat de lidstaten alleen producten kunnen toelaten die glyfosaat bevatten als uit een verdere beoordeling, waarbij rekening wordt gehouden met de voorwaarden van de hernieuwde goedkeuring en de specifieke omstandigheden op hun grondgebied, duidelijk wordt aangetoond dat het gebruik van die producten geen schadelijke gevolgen voor de gezondheid en geen onaanvaardbare risico's voor het milieu met zich meebrengt. De lidstaten moeten controleren of tijdens het daadwerkelijke gebruik aan de aannames die tijdens de autorisaties zijn gedaan wordt voldaan. En, indien nodig, autorisaties wijzigen of zelfs intrekken als zij ontdekken dat deze niet correct worden geïmplementeerd.”

Hiermee benadrukt Berend dat de lidstaten ruimte hebben om zelf te besluiten of glyfosaat wordt toegelaten. Voor de Parkinson Vereniging blijft het daarom belangrijk om in de gaten te houden of er nieuw bewijs beschikbaar komt dat glyfosaat parkinson veroorzaakt. Als dat bewijs er is dan gaat de Parkinson Vereniging, eventueel met hulp van Parkinson’s Europe, zich er hard voor maken dat glyfosaat direct niet meer gebruikt mag worden in Nederland.
